In NICU you’re not allowed to touch your baby or do anything. So I used to sit over his incubator every day and put my face on the plastic. He would just be staring at me and I would close my eyes and imagine that I was spinning this cocoon round his body.
‘Golden Cocoon’ – written by Jane and read by Rachel Bower.
Weaving my protection around your little feet
Pleading my protection through incubator glass
Dripping my protection down see-through tubes
Transfusing my protection from my gaping heart
Sewing my protection into your fragile veins
Binding my protection to your premature parts
Wrapping my protection over so many scars
Pumping my protection into every breath
Threading my protection through your tiny cries
I spin a golden cocoon every day for you
